dotConnected began experimenting with location based services a number of years ago and have developed a large range systems that are able to take advantage of this new and exciting class of information.

Our initial solutions used simple hand held GPS devices to upload route and track information into our systems for storage and display. Later versions of the software took live data from GPRS devices and AIS shipping receivers to automatically update the position and track.

The real test of the system came when the software interfaces to Stratum 5's satellite based GPS receivers was developed and the system was selected by Clipper Ventures Plc to provide the tracking services for its Clipper Round The World Race, which would provide the most punishing testing ground for the onboard tracking units and the land locked software. To mark this joint venture dotConnected and Stratum 5 formed the joint venture trakArace to exploit the ocean racing market.

The software is now able to deal with a multitude of data services and is able to race, store, plot and manage large amounts of historical positional data. Additional services have been included to provide geographic positional notifications or geo fences to provide alerts when a a tracked item moves into a restricted area or moves out of a limited area.
